Growing up in Chicago at a time when neighborhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition, Richard T. Schaefer found himself increasingly intrigued by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighborhoods and people's jobs. His interest in social issues caused him to gravitate to sociology courses at Northwestern University, where he received a B.A. in Sociology. "Originally as an undergraduate I thought I would go on to law school and become a lawyer. But after taking a few sociology courses, I found myself wanting to learn more about what sociologists studied and fascinated by the kinds of questions they raised." This fascination led him to obtain his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Schaefer's continuing interest in race relations led him to write his masters' thesis on the membership of the Ku Klux Klan and his doctoral thesis on racial prejudice and race relations in Great Britain. Dr. Schaefer went on to become a professor of sociology. He has taught introductory sociology for 30 years to students in colleges, adult education programs, nursing programs, and even a maximum-security prison. Dr. Schaefer's love of teaching is apparent in his interaction with his students. "I find myself constantly learning from the students who are in my classes and from reading what they write. Their insights into the material we read or current events that we discuss often become part of future course material and sometimes even find their way into my writing." Dr. Schaefer is author of the third edition of Sociology: A Brief Introduction (McGraw-Hill, 2000). Dr. Schaefer is also the author of Racial and Ethnic Groups now in its eighth edition, and Race and Ethnicity in the United States, second edition. His articles and book reviews have appeared in many journals, including American Journal of Sociology, Phylon: A Review of Race and Culture, Contemporary Sociology, Sociology and Social Research, Sociolog

What do writers and editors mean when they talk about style? Sometimes they mean formatting for consistency and clarity (Is it Texas or Tex. or TX? One space or two after a period?). Sometimes they mean correctness in spelling, grammar, word usage and punctuation (A historic or an historic?). This book shows how to write like the pros.
Despite the handsome incomes they often command, lawyers are far from the happiest of professionals. Seven in ten attorneys in one poll said they would choose other careers if they had to do it over again and, in another poll, fewer than half said they would encourage young people to become lawyers. Indeed, no poll has ever put the law in the top tier of satisfying professions. The economic uncertainty of recent years has only made law students and lawyers think harder than ever before about what they can hope to get out of careers in law. This book not only sheds light on why so many lawyers find so little to like about their jobs, but also explores what they can do about the problem. Drawing on recent psychological research on happiness, Nancy Levit and Douglas Linder highlight various factors that contribute to professional stress and frustration--from pressure to increase the number of billable hours to discontents that occur when the job's demands fail to mesh with a lawyer's personal values or aspirations. They offer an array of coping tools, both large and small, that will help attorneys find more balance in their lives; they also suggest ways that law firms can be more flexible to accommodate their employees' needs, thus boosting morale and, in the process, producing higher-quality work. The authors also show how law students can better define their goals to ensure a satisfying career. Having interviewed more than two hundred lawyers across the country, Levit and Linder enliven their account with engrossing - and sometimes surprising - career stories from both happy and unhappy lawyers. From these stories they develop sensible solutions for lawyers and the legal profession as a whole. Attorneys and law students with doubts or questions about their career choices will find a wealth of reassurance and good advice in this book. Readership: General readers, lawyers, and students interested in law or considering law school
The nursing profession, is the largest health care occupation, with more than 2 million jobs. It is also one of the 10 occupations projected to have the largest numbers of new jobs. Licensed Practical Nurse training lasts about one year and is available in about 1,100 State-approved programs, mostly in vocational or technical schools. Nursing homes are expected to offer the most new jobs. Job seekers in hospitals may face competition as the number of hospital jobs for LPNs declines. Job prospects for nursing and home health aides will also be very good because of fast growth and high replacement needs in these large occupations. Minimum education or training is generally required for entry-level jobs, but earnings are low. This book brings together a detailed description of the profession, including the educational requirements as well as what can be expected upon entering the profession. Present and future issues in the field as well are also examined and a selective bibliography is included on books and journals of particular interest to newcomers to the field.

The history of the Wild West for too many years, has been considered the exclusive domain of the men and women who inhabited the South-western states of Kansas, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Wyoming. Canada had her share of men and women, good and bad, who opened the west for exploration and exploitation. Many famous gunfighters, outlaws, gamblers and lawmen of the Wild West were Canadian. This book exhibits the differences between Canadian settlers and their American counterparts. It shows how the law was enforced in the west even though lawmen were few in number. It touches on the naivete of some settlers and the lack of judgement shown by some leaders. It also seeks to show the injustice that was done to the native people who neither knew nor understood the white man's law.

Ten percent of the Texas population is 65 and older. The state has a large, rapidly growing elderly population, estimated to reach 4.4 million, or 16.1 per cent of the state's total population in 2025. Medicaid spending for long-term care in FY2001 was USD3.3 billion -- 28.5 per cent of all Medicaid spending. Medicaid spending for institutions was more than 70 per cent of Medicaid long-term care spending and more than 20 per cent of all Medicaid spending in F Y2001. Spending for home and community-based services has increased rapidly in recent years and represented 29.2 per cent of Texas long-term care spending in FY2001, primarily due to increased use of the Medicaid Section 1915(c) home and community based waiver program. From FY1990 to FY2001 spending for this program increased from less than 1 per cent to over 21 per cent of all Medicaid long-term care spending in Texas. Texas provides a wide range of services in the home and community to about 100,000 adults with disabilities. Despite this, the state has significant overcapacity in its nursing home industry. As a result, the nursing home occupancy rate is quite low -- 68.5 per cent in 2000.The state continues to serve many persons with developmental disabilities in large state institutions and has no plans to close any facilities in the foreseeable future. Interviews with state officials and a review of state reports highlighted a number of issues including: an imbalance in Medicaid financing favoring institutional care, rather than home and community-based care; a shortage of frontline long-term care workers; and waiting lists for home and community-based services.
Includes a 473 Postal Exam study guide and provides information needed to locate job vacancies, prepare for exams and explore jobs including those that don't require entrance tests. This book covers various occupations from general maintenance and technicians to truck drivers, mail carriers, clerks, administrative and clerical positions.
Despite acute labour shortages during the Second World War, Canadian employers--with the complicity of state officials--discriminated against workers of African, Asian, and Eastern and Southern European origin, excluding them from both white collar and skilled jobs. Jobs and Justice argues that, while the war intensified hostility and suspicion toward minority workers, the urgent need for their contributions and the egalitarian rhetoric used to mobilize the war effort also created an opportunity for minority activists and their English Canadian allies to challenge discrimination. Juxtaposing a discussion of state policy with ideas of race and citizenship in Canadian civil society, Carmela K. Patrias shows how minority activists were able to bring national attention to racist employment discrimination and obtain official condemnation of such discrimination. Extensively researched and engagingly written, Jobs and Justice offers a new perspective on the Second World War, the racist dimensions of state policy, and the origins of human rights campaigns in Canada.
Interest in learning at work has captured the attention of many people around the world, often taking centre stage in policy debates about improving economic performance, prosperity and well-being. This book is about the learning that goes on in workplaces - ranging from offices, factories and shops to gyms, health centres and universities - and how it can be improved. Such learning includes everyday work activity, on-the-job instruction and off-the-job training events. Improving Working as Learning is the first book to analyze systematically learning at work in different settings by developing and applying a new analytical framework. The Working as Learning Framework connects the particularities of work tasks with the way jobs are organized and the wider pressures and constraints organizations face for survival, growth and development. The authors convincingly demonstrate that the framework offers a sophisticated understanding of how improving the work environment - both within the workplace and beyond - can enhance and sustain improvements in learning at work. Each chapter presents evidence - taken from both private and public sectors - to illustrate how the Working as Learning Framework provides a means by which employers, researchers and policy-makers can Improve the conditions for nurturing and sustaining learning at work Build appropriate workforce development plans within given constraints Recognize that the creation and use of knowledge is widely distributed Mobilize existing workplace resources to support learning Enhance and extend our understanding of how workplace learning is shaped by relationships at, and beyond, the workplace This topical book will appeal to an international readership of undergraduate and postgraduate students, vocational teachers and trainers, human resource professionals, policy-makers, and researchers.
The Oxford History of the United States is by far the most respected multi-volume history of our nation. In this prize-winning, critically acclaimed addition to the series, historian Daniel Walker Howe illuminates the period from the battle of New Orleans to the end of the Mexican-American War, an era when the United States expanded to the Pacific and won control over the richest part of the North American continent. Howe's panoramic narrative portrays revolutionary improvements in transportation and communications that accelerated the extension of the American empire. Railroads, canals, newspapers, and the telegraph dramatically lowered travel times and spurred the spread of information. These innovations prompted the emergence of mass political parties and stimulated America's economic development from an overwhelmingly rural country to a diversified economy in which commerce and industry took their place alongside agriculture. In his story, the author weaves together political and military events with social, economic, and cultural history. He examines the rise of Andrew Jackson and his Democratic party, but contends that John Quincy Adams and other Whigs--advocates of public education and economic integration, defenders of the rights of Indians, women, and African-Americans--were the true prophets of America's future. He reveals the power of religion to shape many aspects of American life during this period, including slavery and antislavery, women's rights and other reform movements, politics, education, and literature. Howe's story of American expansion culminates in the bitterly controversial but brilliantly executed war waged against Mexico to gain California and Texas for the United States. Winner of the New-York Historical Society American History Book Prize Finalist, 2007 National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction
