The "Grammar Toolbox" is a comprehensive, practical guide to North American English, how it works and how it is used today. Filled with concise examples and usage tips as well as practice exercises, it unravels the mysteries of English grammar and usage for both intermediate and advanced students of English, as well as for native speakers who want to polish their oral and written performance. Starting with the parts of speech, the building blocks of language, it follows a clear, easy-to-use format. Its concise examples, helpful usage and spelling tips, as well as the practical exercises that reflect the English heard and used in the real world, combine to make it an indispensable tool for use whether as a guide to classroom instruction or as a vital reference for independent learners. While this book stands on its own as an essential resource for all students, it also makes an excellent companion volume to Patricia Munro Conway's Reflections: Developing Proficiency in English. In addition, a 128 page student activity book, the Construction Manual, provides abundant opportunity for additional practice.
This volume presents six alternative approaches to studying second language acquisition -- 'alternative' in the sense that they contrast with and/or complement the cognitivism pervading the field. All six approaches -- sociocultural, complexity theory, conversation-analytic, identity, language socialization, and sociocognitive-- are described according to the same set of six headings, allowing for direct comparison across approaches. Each chapter is authored by leading advocates for the approach described: James Lantolf for the sociocultural approach; Diane Larsen-Freeman for the complexity theory approach; Gabriele Kasper and Johannes Wagner for the conversation-analytic approach; Bonny Norton and Carolyn McKinney for the identity approach; Patricia Duff and Steven Talmy for the language socialization approach and Dwight Atkinson for the sociocognitive approach. Introductory and commentary chapters round out this volume. The editor's introduction describes the significance of alternative approaches to SLA studies given its strongly cognitivist orientation.Lourdes Ortega's commentary considers the six approaches from an 'enlightened traditional' perspective on SLA studies -- a viewpoint which is cognitivist in orientation but broad enough to give serious and balanced consideration to alternative approaches. This volume is essential reading in the field of second language acquisition.
The second edition of Patricia Tabloski's Gerontological Nursing is a comprehensive, research-based book that will guide nursing students in their care of older patients. The book presents information related to normal and pathological changes of aging, with an emphasis on the critical information that nurses need for assessment, diagnosis, planning and evaluating care outcomes for their older clients. Bolstered by current research in nursing, medicine, sociology and psychology, this book combines information on medical-surgical care for older patients with issues facing the older population. It emphasizes both critical thinking and application of the nursing process to give students the confidence they need to provide the highest level of care. New to this edition are Complementary and Alternative Therapies that help readers understand therapies that can supplement traditional medicine.
Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster of staggering proportions. The vicious winds and surging seas that lashed the Gulf Coast on August 31, 2005, paralyzed New Orleans and left a scene of utter devastation in their wake. But when the winds and waves abated, they revealed an unnatural disaster a social catastrophe directly caused by the government's callous indifference to the needs of the region's most vulnerable residents. This pattern of near-criminal government neglect did not begin with its response to Katrina, but the hurricane did lay bare its extraordinary depth and horrifying consequences, exposing how race and class can spell life or death in contemporary America. In the months that followed, The Nation published a series of articles and editorials documenting the gross negligence of the Bush administration and the heroic effort of community organizers and ordinary citizens to put their city back together again, as well as the attempts of political progressives to push for a 'New Deal.' Unnatural Disaster includes riveting on-the-scene reporting, columns, blogs, essays and articles from Mike Davis and Anthony Fontenot, Naomi Klein, Patricia Williams, Jeremy Scahill, Eric Alterman, Adolph Reed, Jr. , Eric Foner, Curtis Wilkie, Billy Sothern, among many others.

"Joseph Nicolar's The Life and Traditions of the Red Man is surely a landmark text, and Annette Kolodny's framing helps make the narrative come alive." Philip Deloria, author of Indians in Unexpected Places "The Life and Traditions of the Red Man is an extraordinary rendering of Eastern Algonquian history, story, and prophecy, self-published in the nineteenth century by a native writer from the northeast coast of the United States. As remarkable as the text was Joseph Nicolar himself, a brilliant and largely self-educated member of the Penobscot tribe who fervently wished to pass on what he could to the younger generations." Patricia Clark Smith, author of Weetamoo, Heart of the Pocassets "Joseph Nicolar's The Life and Traditions of the Red Man, reissued with Annette Kolodny's excellent prefatory material, provides students and scholars of American Indian literatures with a valuable text in a reader-friendly edition, which is, crucially, endorsed by the Penobscot Nation."-- Eric Cheyfitz, editor of The Columbia Guide to American Indian Literatures of the United States since 1945
Patricia Highsmith, one of the great writers of 20th Century American fiction, had a life as darkly compelling as that of her favorite 'hero-criminal', talented Tom Ripley. This biography paints a portrait, from Highsmith's birth in Texas to Hitchcock's filming of her first novel, "Strangers On a Train", to her long, strange, self-exile in Europe.
Intended for aspiring writers, this coursebook covers creative process and 'going public', as well as the popular genres of fiction, poetry, and life writing. It includes sections, which offer advice and exercises, as well as extracts for study, taken from works by a range of writers, from Virginia Woolf to Patricia Highsmith.
F Scott Fitzgerald's St Paul is a city of winter dreams and ice palaces, lakeside parties and neighbourhood hijinks. These are stories of ambition and young love, insecurity and awkwardness, where a poor boy with energy and intelligence can break into the upper classes and become a glittering success. This selection brings together the best of Fitzgerald's St Paul stories -- some virtually unknown, others classics of short fiction. Patricia Hampl's incisive introduction traces the trajectory of Fitzgerald's blazing celebrity and its connections to his life in the city that gave him his best material. Headnotes by Dave Page provide specific ties between the stories and Fitzgerald's life in St Paul.
This text offers a historical perspective on "black intellectuals" as a social category, ranging over a century - from Frederick Douglass to Patricia Williams. It challenges the idea that high culture is "white culture"; and that racial uplift is the sole concern of the black intellectual.

Beyond Retelling is a phenomenal book."--Sheila Bostrom, Thomson Elementary, Brush, CO "The authors have done an amazing job and have hit upon one of the biggest issues confronting teaching reading today. In a time when teachers are pressured to cover material at a lightening pace, higher level thinking skills are not being taught as they should. This book reminds us that we should be creating critical thinkers and lifelong learners!" --Pam B. Cole, Department Chair, Kennesaw State University This book will become a must-read for any teacher whose state requires students to be evaluated on the higher level thinking processes of synthesis, analysis, evaluation, or application as they move through elementary and middle school!

When confronting twentieth-century political oppression and violence, writers and artists in Portugal and South America have often emphasized the complex relationship between freedom and tyranny. In Seeing Politics Otherwise, Patricia Vieira uses an interdisciplinary approach to explore the interrelation of politics and representations of vision and blindness in Latin American and Iberian literature, film, and art. Vieira's discussion focuses on three literary works: Graciliano Ramos's Memoirs of Prison, Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden, and Jose Saramago's Blindness, with supplemental analyses of sculpture and film by Ana Maria Pacheco, Bruno Barreto, and Marco Bechis. These artists use metaphors of blindness to denounce the totalizing gaze of dictatorial regimes. Rather than equating blindness with deprivation, Vieira argues that shadows, blindfolds, and blindness are necessary elements for re-imagining the political world and re-acquiring a political voice. Seeing Politics Otherwise offers a compelling analysis of vision and its forcible deprivation in the context of art and political protest.
